“Eric Williams and his baby girl lost their lives when their bungalow was completely gutted by fire last night at Port Hope Simpson, Labrador. The fire was discovered at 4.30 this morning. It is thought that Williams lost his life in attempting to save his daughter. Mrs Williams was rescued by being taken through a window and is suffering from superficial injuries and shock. The maid was also saved. The house was still burning at 10.30 this morning and the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Mrs Williams is under the care of the doctor from St Mary's river, who was fortunately present at the time of the fire. Williams is the son of and Mrs J O Williams, of Cardiff, to whom the sympathy of the community will be extended in their tragic bereavement."

'Mr Eric Williams Lost Life Attempting Rescue'
‘Charred remains of Father and Child found in Ruins.’
“In connection with the tragedy at Port Hope Simpson when Eric Williams and his baby daughter Erica lost their lives, reported in Saturday's Telegram; it is learned that Mrs Williams was very badly burned and is in a critical condition in hospital. The fire which destroyed their home started from an open fire in the living room. According to a message received by F. V. Chesman, Secretary of the Labrador Development Company the fire started about 4.30 a.m. The maid, who was asleep upstairs, was awakened by smoke. She ran to the living room but was driven back by the flames. Then she made her way out the backdoor to the window of Mrs Williams's bedroom. Williams had smashed a window and was assisting his wife to safety. He then left to rescue his baby daughter and this was all that was seen of him until yesterday at noon when his body and that of the child were found in the ruins close to where the bedroom window had been. Owing to the tie - up of transportation due to winter conditions the bodies of the victims will be interred at Port Hope Simpson."

‘A Shocking Tragedy’
The shocking tragedy at Port Hope Simpson, resulting in the death of Eric Williams and his infant daughter, with injuries sustained by Mrs Williams in the fire which destroyed their home, has touched the hearts of everyone in the community. It would be difficult to conceive a more terrible bereavement for the young widow and mother than to have her loved ones snatched away under such terrible circumstances. Sympathy for her in her sorrow can but feebly be expressed in words, but it is certain that it is general and wholehearted, as well as for and Mrs J O Williams, the parents of the deceased."
